Which Bike Licence Do I need

Unlike the test and licence for cars in the UK, the options when it comes to the bike licence are much more confusing. As a rough guide you can read the following. But the best way is to contact a proper instructor for professional motorbike training.

CBT Training
Most people refer to it as the CBT Test, but the truth is it isn’t a test but a day of training. If you are deemed safe to ride at the end of it then you will be given a CBT certificate. Once you have done this you will be able to ride 50cc moped, or if over 17 a 125cc bike or scooter with L plates. If you passed your car driving licence before 01/02/2001 then you will be able to ride a 50cc moped without L plates or a CBT (but for your own safety you should do the CBT anyway!)

A1 Light Licence
You will need to take a practical test on a bike of 75cc to 125cc. This will mean you can ride without L plates and can be a good option if you are happy with your smaller machine.

A2 Standard Licence
Taken on a 120cc to 125cc bike. Passing this will mean that you are restricted to a 33bhp bike for two years, after which you will be upgraded to an A Licence without having to take another test.
